When planning my trip to Wales I was concerned about how long it would take to climb Snowdon. What I didn’t fully appreciate is that some of this would inevitably end up on the path and more so given that when the temperature drops below zero you get hoar frost which makes it slippery and even slipperier if someone has been walking through it with wet or muddy boots.

Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, is well known for being a fairly easy mountain to climb. It’s also popular with families, which makes it a great option for people who want to start climbing and bagging their first Munros.

To the question of how long does it take to climb to the top of Snowdon? The honest answer is that it all depends on the route of the mountain you take with all routes estimated to take about 4-7 hours maximum. 

The easiest route is the Llanberis Path, which is about 9 miles return, starting at Llanberis in Snowdonia. The path winds around the northern side of Snowdon and isn’t too steep. You’ll see some great waterfalls on the way up and some nice views of Llyn Padarn (the lake) if you look back over your shoulder on the way up.

This route can be taken from the train station or the car park. The first part of the trail is a gradual ascent up the valley with some nice views of the lake.
