New set photos from Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie live-action movie show Margot Robbie’s heroine and Ryan Gosling’s Ken wearing cowboy hats.

New set photos from the upcoming live-action Barbie movie show Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling sporting cowboy hats. Originally, the live-action adaptation of the eponymous Mattel fashion doll line was being developed for Sony, with Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway circling the title role. After a lot of creative changes, however, Warner Bros. took over and cast Robbie as Barbie. Subsequently, Little Women director Greta Gerwig was hired to helm and co-write the film, and in 2021, Gosling was cast as Barbie’s male counterpart, Ken. Filming on Barbie is currently underway in Leavesden, England, with a release date in July 2023.

Lopoid VIDEO OF THE DAY

Joining Robbie and Gosling is an all-star ensemble cast consisting of America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Emma Mackey, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, Will Ferrell, Ncuti Gatwa, and Hari Nef. All are tipped to play important roles in the movie, with Rae and Nef reported to be portraying alternative live-action versions of Barbie, with Gatwa and Liu playing different Kens. Currently, plot details for Barbie aren’t clear, but reports suggest that the movie is a revolutionary take on the beloved IP, a satirically feminist comedy that topples presumptions and starts a larger conversation about identity and being one’s true self. While only two official Barbie images have been released, some behind-the-scenes sneak peeks have come from various set photos.

Twitter user best of margot has shared some brand new behind-the-scenes set photos from Gerwig’s Barbie live-action movie. The snapshots offer new looks at Robbie and Gosling’s characters as they sport cowboy hats and channel an unmistakable western look. Some images also show Robbie together with Gerwig on the set, and the duo looks very cheerful as they chat between shots. Take a look at the pictures below.

These new images come after Warner Bros. shared the first official look at Robbie’s Barbie, merrily riding her iconic pink convertible against a flashy pink set. The studio has also released a still of Ryan Gosling’s shirtless Ken, who divided the internet after he was shown looking dreamy with bleach blonde hair, personalized underwear, and stone-washed sleeveless denim jacket. Another picture had shown off Robbie with pink bellbottoms that had a ’70s rockstar tone. Combined with these new set photos, the images collectively point to the idea that the upcoming Barbie live-action movie will be an extravagantly camp affair, packed with artistic opulence and nostalgic charm.

Robbie and Goslin’s new Barbie and Ken costumes are reminiscent of Mattel’s 1980s Western Barbie line, as well as its selection of Cowgirl Barbie. If the film plans to pull from this iconic toy line,  then audiences can perhaps expect some horses to show up in the live-action iteration. Ponies have long been a staple of the Barbie toy franchise, and were featured regularly in the Cowgirl Barbie set editions. This could also mean that Robbie and Gosling may go horseback riding in the movie, presumably sharing some romantic moments during the sport. The new costumes also support the idea that Barbie isn’t set in a contemporary era, since ll of Robbie and Gosling’s costumes so far are inspired by the Barbie line’s classic 20th-century dresses. Of course, the full details will become clearer once the first Barbie trailer is released.
