Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

What did Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) say to the Scarlet Witch in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and just what did it mean? The confrontation between the two versions of Wanda in the Doctor Strange 2 ending was one of the film’s most touching moments, but the line was lost on many audiences that saw the film in theaters. With Multiverse of Madness releasing on Disney+ and other streaming platforms, fans have another chance to take the scene in properly. Here is Wanda’s integral line and its meaning fully explained.

Lopoid VIDEO OF THE DAY

After having a taste of her imaginary dream life with Vision and their twin sons, Tommy and Billy, in Wandavision, Wanda begins a downward spiral when it is all ripped away from her. Wanda is willing to do whatever it takes to get her family back — even if the rest of the world has to pay for it. When her desperate search for her family leads her to the Darkhold — a collection of spells that, combined with America Chavez’s powers, allows her to move within the multiverse — Wanda Maximoff begins her transformation into the Scarlet Witch. After harvesting America’s powers, the Scarlet Witch plans to step into the life of one of her alternate selves and raise their children as her own.

The Doctor Strange 2 ending sees America realizing that the only way to stop the Scarlet Witch is to give her what she wants; she creates a portal into Earth-838 and allows the Scarlet Witch to step inside, only for her to discover that her children in this universe see her as the monster she has become. The Tommy and Billy of Earth-838 don’t love her as she dreamed of; they only fear her. It takes another Wanda to truly understand the pain that she is in and the love she feels for her sons. After all the destruction the Scarlet Witch caused, Earth-838’s Wanda ends her tirade with a single line; “Know that they’ll be loved.”

What Wanda’s “Know That They’ll Be Loved” Line Really Means

Billy Teddy Wanda Maximoff Doctor Strange 2

Wanda’s life on Earth-616 has been full of pain; she lost her parents, her brother, Pietro, the love of her life, and her sons. Wandavision gave her a brief moment of happiness, and the Darkhold revealed that every other version of herself in the multiverse was able to have what she desperately desired while she was left to suffer. She couldn’t comprehend why she wasn’t allowed happiness if she had the power to obtain it; it was only 838-Wanda’s remark that made her realize that, while it may not be her that raises them, her sons will be still be loved across the multiverse by every other iteration of herself.

This line would lead the Scarlet Witch to make her ultimate sacrifice, seemingly giving her life in order to destroy the Darkhold as she collapses Mount Wundagore on top of herself. Her desire to get what she wanted turned her into a monster instead of the loving mother she wanted to be, and she finally came to accept that her attempts to reunite her family ultimately had just harmed others. By sacrificing herself and destroying the Darkhold in every multiverse at the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Wanda was able to contribute to the safety and the happiness of her children across the multiverse one last time.
